Humanity has suffered through the COVID – 19 pandemic for 15 months. We’ve witnessed its toll through media and often, tragically, in person. We’ve learned more about pandemic diseases than we ever could have imagined. Voluntarily and involuntarily we’ve accepted restrictions on our behavior to protect ourselves and others from the disease and likewise exposed ourselves to the risks. We have seen the inequities of the global response.

For those in more developed nations, such as ours, the risks are significantly diminishing in spite of many early missteps, but there are still risks and there will be risks in the future. Can we predict where risks will arise? Can we prepare for new variants? How can science and resources be best directed to benefit humanity?
