Social Justice is one of the hallmarks of the Ethical Culture Movement. Content for our social justice learning includes diversity and equity issues related to race, ethnicity, culture, gender, class, family forms and disability. The goal of the social justice curriculum is to:
- Cultivate children to develop as activists against injustice directed at them or others.
- Build a confident self-identity.
- Construct a knowledgeable and confident self-identity.
- Develop empathetic, comfortable, and learned ways of interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Learning to be critical thinkers about various forms of discrimination
- Eliminating bias language and learning to use a vocabulary that supports our effort to restructure a more just society.
The Ethics Curriculum uses empathy and reason to help children explore answers to life’s big questions about humanity, the universe, and other philosophical inquiries about how to live a meaningful life. Children discuss ethical dilemmas, share stories from their lives, and demonstrate activities to construct a worldview that aligns with their values and principles. Some themes and topics explored are:
- What are the World Religions?
- Who is God?
- What is belief?
- What is Humanism?
- What happens after we die?
- Why are we here?
- How did we get here?
- Where did we come from
- How do I decide?
Children learn to respect themselves, the earth, animals and other people. Using empathy and reason children discover how they want to be treated and how to treat others and the world around them. They learn how to build and foster healthy relationships. Some themes covered include:

- Dealing with Feelings
- Being Responsible
- Doing the Right Thing
