Have you used the self-checkout lane at your food store lately? Have you used Amazon or other online retailer to purchase items you would have otherwise gone to a store to buy? Advances in technology have resulted in increased speed and convenience for consumers – and have also reduced the need for human workers. What if what we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg and an ever increasing range of jobs are covered by machines? If your job is taken over by a machine, what will that mean for your sense of self and for your attitudes about the importance of working?
