Our guest speaker is Kenneth Chamberlain, Jr. In 2012, when Kenneth’s father, Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. , pushed the button on his medical alert device, an ambulance was dispatched to his home with accompanying police. Kenneth senior then saw through his peephole that the police had their guns drawn, he became frightened and he refused to open his door to them. This caused a standoff that escalated into a confrontation during which the police broke down the door, tased the elder Mr. Chamberlain and shot him dead. His son discusses the police policies and practices that have led to excessive violence in police interactions with citizens of color and explores the way through which we can change our communities to be more responsive to the needs of its people.
