As a 25-year member and escapee of the Church of Scientology, cult expert Chris Shelton examines how groups like Scientology lure unsuspecting and otherwise intelligent people into their scams using a familiar set of psychological techniques. Chris shares the first-hand experience of his grueling ordeal and escape, and draws upon current social science research to uncover the disturbing links between predatory religious sects, gangs, con artists, and abusive relationships. Come and learn about the warning signs and how we all could be vulnerable to such destructive schemes.

Chris Shelton is an author, podcaster, and researcher around the subjects of coercive control, thought reform, and destructive cults. After his escape from the Church of Scientology in 2013, Chris wrote Scientology: A to Xenu – An Insider’s Guide to What Scientology is Really All About. He also appeared on and served as a consultant to the Emmy-award winning “Scientology and the Aftermath with Leah Remini.” On his YouTube channel and popular podcast, Sensibly Speaking, Chris spills the secrets on destructive cults, explores the recovery process, and interviews psychologists, sociologists, and neuroscientists.
