Present history: Does “Trumpism” fall into the characterization and patterns of historical fascism?  Fascism has taken on a distinctive national identity in each troubled county in which it rises offering an authoritarian alternative to a polarized world full of fear and anger. It projects social conflict as an epic “religious” or cultic battle. Fascism projects strength and decisiveness… directing a unifying movement urged to obedience and action to purge contaminating elements and restore a golden age of an elite race (Romans, Aryans, domination of “white” nativist power and culture).

Trump says he will “Make America Great Again,” but what is his antecedent golden age, and who has caused us to fall from greatness? You won’t have to wait too long before he will tell you who is to blame and what to do about it, free of analysis, learning or debate. Who needs policy when you have a strong leader with a good mind advising himself on a program of action.  “Action!”  was Mussolini’s favorite word and hortatory call, repeated three times. From what quarter will the ranks of the squads, storm troopers, and militias be filled to take on tasks that cannot be assigned to the official arms of police and army? Who will have the guns required to accomplish these tasks, and the loyalty to take initiative or follow orders in the space between legal order and politics. WHAT ARE OUR ALTERNATIVES?
