Recent events raise complex questions about how we define freedom of expression and where we consider imposing limits. The appearance of anti-Muslim ads on public transport in cities across this country and efforts to control speech on college campuses are just some of the issues that provoke roiling debates over the First Amendment and the government obligation to protect vulnerable minorities. Join us as a distinguished panel of lawyers who have devoted their careers to the defense of civil rights provide historical context and a range of perspectives on these contemporary issues. Q&A will follow.

Bina Ahmad is a human rights and animal rights attorney. She serves as national vice-president of the National Lawyers Guild and is a public defender with the Legal Aid Society.

Alan Levine, a civil liberties/civil rights lawyer, was an NYCLU staff lawyer for twelve years. He has handled many First Amendment cases and advocated on behalf of victims of Islamophobia.

Arlene Popkin is a recently retired Legal Aid trial lawyer and a life-long civil libertarian. She serves on the boards of the NYCLU and its Lower Hudson Valley Chapter.
